About the San Juan
The San Juan was a felucca ship with a very important distinction. Following the War of Independence, Spain had lost all American colonies and merchant marine ships were scarce. In order to re-establish the routes to the Antilles, small coastal sailing boats remained.
Eventually, trade was re-opened following a Royal Decree from Charles III for colonies that had remained loyal. So, the felucca San Juan was the first ship to make a voyage following these historic events.
