National Historic Ships UK Announces Flagships of the Year 2026

The National Historic Ships UK (NHS-UK) has officially unveiled its Flagships of the Year for 2026, celebrating four remarkable vessels that represent the richness of the UK’s maritime heritage.

Each year, this prestigious recognition highlights historic ships that actively promote public engagement, conservation, and education within the maritime sector. For 2026, all selected vessels also mark significant milestone anniversaries—making this year’s lineup even more special.

Meet the 2026 Flagships

Hydrogen (Maldon, Essex)

A beautifully preserved 1906 spritsail barge, Hydrogen once transported tar, creosote, and oil along key waterways such as the Thames and Medway. During WWII, it served on the Clyde, playing an important role in wartime logistics.

Today, Hydrogen offers scenic sailing experiences from Maldon, allowing visitors to step back in time while enjoying traditional maritime travel.
2026 Milestone: Celebrating its 120th anniversary

Redshank (Bristol)

Built in 1936, Redshank is a classic narrowboat that once carried essential goods like coal, timber, and even the famous Rose’s Lime Juice between Birmingham and London.

Now, it operates as a passenger and charter vessel in Bristol and along the River Avon, offering a unique canal cruising experience.
2026 Milestone: Celebrating its 90th anniversary

Sea Scamp (Southampton)

Sea Scamp is a 1936 racing yacht with a fascinating international history. Originally built in Germany, it was used to train Luftwaffe navigators before being brought to the UK as part of war reparations.

Later raced by the Royal Marines, the yacht is now co-owned by a syndicate of over 100 enthusiasts and actively sails in the Solent.
2026 Milestone: Celebrating its 90th anniversary

The Golden Hinde (London)

A full-scale reconstruction of the legendary ship sailed by Sir Francis Drake, The Golden Hinde is one of London’s most iconic maritime attractions.

The current vessel famously circumnavigated the globe in the 1970s and has since become a popular educational and tourist destination on the Thames at Southwark.

What the Flagship Title Means

Each selected vessel will receive:

  • A special broad pennant to fly proudly
  • An engraved brass plaque, sponsored by Engraving Studios
  • Recognition as ambassadors for the UK’s maritime heritage

Flagships will also host flag-hoisting ceremonies during April and May 2026, inviting the public and media to join in the celebrations.

Celebrating Maritime Heritage Since 2009

The NHS-UK Flagship Awards have been running since 2009, highlighting the importance of preserving historic vessels and sharing their stories with future generations.

These ships play a vital role in:

  • Hosting events, workshops, and open days
  • Promoting maritime education and conservation
  • Supporting initiatives like photography competitions and volunteer awards

Notably, 2026 also marks the 20th anniversary of National Historic Ships UK, making this year’s selections even more meaningful.

Historic vessels are more than just relics—they are living pieces of history that connect communities to their maritime roots. Through these Flagships, NHS-UK continues to inspire public interest, encourage preservation efforts, and celebrate the UK’s seafaring legacy.
