About the Morel “Secret Vessel”
The Morel secret vessel was the first Russian military submarine. Built in 1721, by Efim Nikanov, a humble carpenter working at the shipyard. Nikanov sent several petitions to the Russian Emperor, requesting to built a vessel which could sink ships during the calmer weather. The Emperor finally ordered Nikanov to design such a vessel and begin its construction at the site of the Galerny Door in St Petersburg. The submarine was designed to be 6 m long and had barrel-shaped contours which were fastened with iron hoops. The vessel was equipped with incendiary tubes, hence the submarine became known as the fire vessel. The submarine could accommodate a crew of 5 people.
Morel “Secret Vessel” Model Ship Kit –
The construction of the submarine was done using laser cut hull planking. The hull planking is made of a single-layered veneer that is 1.5 mm thick. The kit also includes a special jig for the precise bending of the planking following the hull shape. This model submarine kit was designed based on archived documents as no historical drawings of the submarine remain to this day. The model kit is suits for beginners, but can also be an enjoyable experience for experienced builders. The instructions include photos and detailed drawings.
