The Corsair was originally a merchant brig, until it fell into the hands of the Corsairs. Corsairs were privateers, who were authorised to conduct raids on ships of nations at war with France. Once these ships were under their control, they would be fitted out with 16 cannons and 4 falconets to help carry out their dubious duties with ease.
